B2B Wholesale Fulfillment from a 3PL: How to Set It Up

B2B wholesale orders have different fulfillment requirements than B2C. Here is how to set up the workflow at a 3PL.

B2B wholesale fulfillment requires pallet-level staging, commercial invoices, and often EDI-compliant shipping documentation. The workflow is fundamentally different from unit-level B2C pick and pack.

Before your first wholesale order ships, provide your 3PL with the buyer's routing guide — the retailer's specific requirements for carton labels, pallet configuration, appointment scheduling, and allowed carrier list.

Major retailers have strict compliance requirements. Failure to follow a routing guide results in chargebacks — typically 2–5% of order value per violation. These add up quickly and often exceed the cost of getting it right.

If you are running B2B and B2C from the same 3PL, make sure the 3PL has separated workflows. B2B wholesale staging cannot share a line with B2C pick and pack without creating workflow and labeling errors.
